As I was bringing my train into South Kearny a few days ago, I saw NJT #4217 coupled to nine Comet I coaches. Three were cabs, and six were trailers.

The car numbers are those that SEPTA is reportedly getting in their recent purchase: Comet I cabs 5121, 5132 and Comet I trailers 5727, 5728, 5735, 5741, 5742, and 5747. Comet I cab car 5118 is the 9th car that will serve as the parts supply, as evidenced by wreck damage to the engineer's side trap and stairwell at the cab end, some missing windows, and other underfloor parts missing (and that car was on the rear of the consist).

So it's all set to go...now we just wait for them to arrive on SEPTA property....it was supposed to make the move down on Friday; now it is tentatively set for this coming Friday.

The cars were built by Pullman-Standard in 1970-1971, and rebuilt by Bombardier in 1986-1987. I believe the trailer coaches seat 131 and the two cab cars 118. And there is an error factor of 2 to 4 in that seat count.

SEPTA plans to give the cars a quick overhaul and have them ready for service with the October 26th schedule change. No word on if the cars will be renumbered or re-striped. The plan is to use the cars to expand the push-pull sets by one car. Due to differences in radio and cab signal equipment, it is likely the former NJT cabs will operate in mid-train only.
