This article is from NJ Transit. It looks as that the deliveries will start this month. Which is good. Since NJT does despirately need new buses. Which they should have had 289 MTS RTSs but due to mechanical problems they didnt receive the order. Which to me they should have not rejected it. Keep them operating and once the NABIs arrive use the MTS RTSs only on weekdays. Maybe limit them to peak trips only. BTW. When will Camden and or Trenton receive the new NABIs?

I e-mailed NJ Transit two weeks ago. They told me that the NABI's won't be delivered until the end of the year or early 2009. I think their having problems with some of the changes NJ Transit asked to be made from the demo bus.

If I remember correctly, the bus had some serious issues, particularly with the propulsion system.

I hope NJT is still getting the 1445 NABI 416s. Since they are despirately in need of new bsues. To me rather then CAT C9 and ZF Echomat it should have been ISM/Voith. And also I think NABI should have only used the restyled design for 40LFWs and leave the 416 in the standard design. Since Bmore MTA, SEPTA and DART have no issues with their NABIs like NJT did.

Meanwhile, the old Flx Metro B's keep wheezing on their creaky wheels....... :-/

Before I heard NJT was officially getting NABIs I was suspecting the bid would be from Gillig for their next delivery of new buses. Since NJT used Cummins ISC on the Novabus RTSs and the ISC is a small TA engine and NJT is a major TA it wouldnt surprise me if they purchased Gilligs.

Gillig historically has never bid on huge transit orders, citing their quality standards. At best, if they had gone after the NJT contract, you can bet they'd stretch the deliveries out over a 10-year period, lol

And NJT has a historic aversion to low-floor buses, citing they do not meet their needs for seating capacity. With Gillig no longer making the Phantom, they would be out of the running for NJT anyway.

Besides NABI, their other big option would be to go with OBI, which still offers the Orion V high-floor bus.

According to Gilligs website they do still make the Phantom. There was a rumor it may be discontinued sometime soon but hopefully it will not. Besides. Even major TAs have at times gotten a bid from Gillig. Not just small TAs. Like Pittsburgh. Memphis. Broward County FL. Palm Tran. And many others. So they do not bid only on small TAs. I dont 100% think they bid on multi year contracts but they do at times bid on major TA orders. I did suspect Bmore MTA would end up with Gillig for their next Generation of new buses. Which I would not mind.

Sorry to hear you are getting NABIs....in 30 years of transit driving they are the worst Buses I ever drove!!! SEPTA bought 400 of them in 1996 never bought another one!! Thank God. From a drivers point, the dash sits high, the whole layout is huge&unconfortable. The bus itself you fight all day long, goes where it wants. Stopping the beast is another whole story. A ton of drivers at SEPTA have permanantly sore ankles &knees from them damn things. Maybe 12 years later thse problems are gone??? BE CAREFULL!!!

Im actually from York PA. Which mainly owns Cutaways. Orion Is and Gilligs. I dont know if they still have the ex SEPTA Neoplans. I myself do not like NABIs either. When I first rode Bmore MTA in 2000 they had NABI 416s from 1997-1999 and a new order at the end of 2000 into 2001. And to me the NABIs looked smaller then the Flxibles from sitting in the rear row. They even look smaller then MTAs New Flyers. If I ran SEPTA instead of 400 NABIs in 96-97. It would be Orion Vs from 97-00 and 2002. As well as Orion VIIs in 2003. And New Flyer starting in 04. As well as RTSs in 94 Flxible Metro Es in 95. Also Neoplan AN460HFs in 96 with Series 50. And 01 Neoplan AN460HFs with Series 60.

As for NABIs. SEPTAs NABIs have Detroit Diesel Series 50. So do Delaware Authority for Regional Transits 02 NABIs. Bmore MTAs have Cummins M11. And NJTs are suppose to have Caterpillar C9. I do like the way SEPTAs NABIs sound but Im not really all that fond of NABIs.

I can attest to that my right knee is shot from standing on the brake to stop the damn thing and not to mention the pressing of the brake to release the back door interlock :'( 5269bad

So SEPTAs NABIs have the interlock where you have to press the brake before being able to take off? Bmore MTA has that starting with the New Flyer D40LFs and some drivers claim their foot was swollen from having to keep pressing the brake before take off. The rest of the fleet doesnt have that.
