For the Gillig Phantoms. 401-455 are 1995. And 456-468 are 1996. The only differences between the 2 are the stop request bell and the interior speakers. The 08 Gillig Advantages. I once read that 201-248 are 40102 as the 30fts are 249-290. Wilmington only got 261-270 as Dover/Rehobeth have 249-260 and 271-290. As for the 1999 Champion Contenders. Theres gotta be at least 34 because I spotted 634 in Wilmington DE back in June when I was there. It may be assigned to the Dover/Rehobeth base. And Im not too sure but I thought DART would retire the 95 Gillig Phantoms when the 08 Advantages arrived. But with gas prices as high as they are Im sure DART ridership increased. And is still increasing. So it wouldnt surprise me if the 95 Phantoms still operate. |

I'm not making any modifications to the page until that list is more specific. How many 1995-1996 Gillig Phantoms did Dart retire from the 2008 order of Gilligs? In other words are they completely retired from service? If not do you have a list of the ones which are retired? How many 30 foot advantages did Dart receive this year and their fleet numbers? How many 40 foot advantages did Dart receive this year and their fleet numbers? |

Its actually 1995-1996 Gillig Phantoms. According to Geraldo 20 of them are remaining. As for the 08 Advantages. It was mentioned DART will received 90 of them total. 48 40fts and 42 30fts. The 40fts are numbered 201-248. And the 30fts are 249-290. |

Well this is part of a more bigger plan to revamp the DART page with more conclusive information. So far this is what I've composed about the current bus roster at dart. If theres anything missing or needs to be corrected then please let me know. Hopefully by month's end I will append these changes to the DART page on the site. |

Well from reading the posts above, it seems the DART roster is pretty inconclusive. Which leads me to these questions. How many Contenders did Dart purchased back in 1995? Also since they are now at the end of their 12 year life cycle. How soon will these units will start to be retired and what will they will be placed with? What powertain did these aforementioned units sport? Nabi60SFW9620 , Do you have any photos of buses #625 or higher? |

I didnt get any pics but I did see 634 dropping people off at Rodney Square back in June while I was on a NABI 416. I forgot the NABIs number and I did not have my camera with me at the time. The driver of 634 did stop and talk to the driver on the NABI I was on for a minute as others were boarding the bus then shortly after I saw 634 pull out from Rodney Square. I do suspect that bus runs out of the Dover/Rehobeth base. Also it looks as that Dover/Rehobeth operators can wear shorts and Wilmington drivers cannot. So either different base supervisors have different policies or Wilmington operators abused the privilage.

Umm if it runs out of the Dover base, why would it be found in Wilmington? Well anyways hopefully the roster which I've posted is pretty conclusive. I would hate the fact that certain units like 625-up would be missed after they have been in service for over 12 years. Posted Image Edited by Van2006ko, Sep 20 2008, 09:09 AM.

Same reason that SEPTA occasionally shifts buses between depots....I'm sure DART can do the same with the smaller buses if needed. Edited by silverliner_2, Sep 20 2008, 12:27 PM.

The highest numbered Contender I recall seeing is 640. I'll have to check my photos to see if there is anything beyond that. There is another numbered 901 that was on the roster two weeks ago (I saw it on the 208). There is quite a bit of mystery surrounding these buses, as I've found. I was in the area two weeks ago and spotted one of the new Gilligs from afar (so got no number) on the 206, but all the other buses I saw on routes and at the Park and Ride lot were Contenders. Many of them were looking a little worn, especially where wraps had been removed and took some paint off. Only a handful still have the 'It's Hide Tide You Rode' sticker on them, and one (can't recall the number) had only the top half, with an ad sticker below the windows. I always liked these buses and will be sad to see them go. I was always a little mystified why DART didn't keep anything bigger around for services down there - many of the 208 trips (the Rehoboth-Ocean City line) operate with two sections to handle the crowds. DART did have a couple of 40' Gilligs in the area a few years back but these were backups for the ferry shuttle and I don't think they ever got onto any of the Resort Transit runs. |

I was told by a Resort Transit operator a few years back that many of the Contenders were moved to Wilmington after the shore season was over. The Resort buses are based in Dover and are shuffled back and forth between the Park and Ride lot in Rehoboth and Dover for maintenance, etc. There is a very small (one bus) maintenance shed at the Park and Ride lot and it handles only routine maintenance. I was also told that the 206 runs, between Georgetown and Rehoboth, are often used for the buses moving between bases to minimize deadhead mileage. Keep in mind that the Resort Transit operation is seasonal and all the routes except 206 shut down accordingly. 206 is the only year-round route. |

From what I read DART runs a summer route that goes from Rehobeth do Wilmington DE. So that could be why it was running in Wilmington if its assigned to Dover or Rehobeth. Why it would be running out of Dover on that route. I dont know. If I ran DART the route from Wilmington to Rehobeth would mostly operate out of Wilmington as 40ft buses. Mainly Gilligs. And out of DARTs bases. I actually like the Wilmington base as it operates mainly 40ft buses. If I worked for DART Id rather work at Wilmington for that reason. |
