Im not sure exactly what all features the new fare boxes will have. For day passes. You have to do the same as you do now. Request a day pass. Then pay. And the day pass will come out from the back left corner on the top of the fare box. Then when using it on other buses you swipe it on the card swiper on the right side behind the piece that the money goes in. And change. The change slot is right infront of the dollar accepter. These fare boxes. If the dollar isnt accepted it will spit back out. And change that doesnt get accepted. Theres a change return slot under the money accepter. With DART. It wouldnt really surprise me if drivers allowed passengers to show their day pass instead of having it swiped. Rabbit Transit has these same fare boxes. So does BARTA, as well as WMATA and Baltimore MTA. I dont know when SEPTA will get them.

:'( Noooooooo.....I hate those fareboxes. WMATA (and everyone) has a similar box. I hate the part where there is no glass section that shows your dollar bill. So if the machine eats your money, it's too bad for you. Additionally, the slot in the slot where you have to slide your pass is so awkwardly placed. You have to reach out to the far side of the machine and slide the paper card towards the driver.

And, Mr. Will, that's not a change slot....that's just for rejected coins...like pennies. Fortunately, SEPTA has no plans to replace its fareboxes anytime soon.

Here's something to note...it has a Smart Card target on the box. Is a new Smart Card coming soon for DART? If so, I hope they are working with SEPTA to develop it....

Those fare boxes have a seperate computer like screen that hangs to a pole which has buttons on the sides with what passes ot tickets the button works to produce. And the center of the screen shows exactly how much was inserted. Baltimore MTA had those fare boxes since 2005. If the money isnt accepted it will be returend. Plus I dont know about DART. But I know Baltimore MTA and SEPTA have ran buses where the fare box did not work. So in that situation the ride is free if your paying the 1 way fare.

WMATA's farebox on the bus stole a dollar from me when I was attempting to pay for a daypass. The bill receiver wasn't working properly for some reason, and that dollar was not read. The driver told me to insert another dollar (after I already paid for the 3 dollar daypass) I was internally livid...

I don't mind a free ride every once in a while! :)

I think Baltimore MTA had that issue before. But when I knew about it the driver stuck paper into the money accepters allow passengers to hold their money. When the system isnt printing out tickets different drivers handle that different ways. I know some will ask which fare passengers are paying and have them pay when they transfer. Or some will just say the entire fare box isnt working and allow everyone to hold their money.

Baltimore MTA is having problems with their Gen Fare Odyssey fare boxes also. But I dont think its as bad as WMATA. I dont know about SEPTA or WMATA but Baltimore MTA. Fare boxes are even not working when the bus is first pulled out. Even if the base supervision knows about it. That also goes for the A/C. The rear door. The destination sign. As well as even a Check engine light on. And who knows what else. Sometimes they just dump a bus with a malfunction on someone who pulls out in the afternoon if the bus was suppose to be assigned to someone who pulls out in the morning if they notice something isnt working right. Like one day in June. Block 3105 was suppose to be 0034. 3108 was suppose to be 9915. 3105 pulls out in the morning and 3108 pulls out in the afternoon and pulls in around 5pm. That morning the AC on 0034 was not working. So the driver who pulls out 3105 took 9915 after discovering the AC wasnt working. 0034 was assigned to 3108 block as the result. The driver of 3108 asked for another bus and was informed that they didnt have anything else available to assign. So he got stuck with a broken AC as well as a unsecured emergency exit window. I dont know officially if this was the case but I think 3105 should have been 0034 and 3108 was suppose to be 9915 that particular day.

What DART has is the GenFare Odyssey?!? Those are THE most complicated farebox that puts their Cents-A-Bill (the fareboxes SEPTA's got since '94-95 Their oldest model of the original '82 Cents-A-Bill they used until '95) to shame. And what with this "Put your DARTCard into the farecard insertion slot" Place? What's wrong with sliding it? (no offense to you DART riders) Wait a second... You slide transfer cards while you insert DARTCards into the boxes. Oh I get it now. :-/
Wait a minute again! The DCMetro AND MTA Maryland's Odysseys are jamming up too? I hope SEPTA DOES NOT get those GenFare Odysseys, but then again, they'll regularly maintain those as they do with the current Cents-A-Bills that they got on the whole fleet. :(

Hmm, I just realized I haven't ridden DART since they got these new boxes. I thought the old system worked just fine.

With the DART cards, I imagine you can dip to deduct the fare from the card. If you want the daypass, then you dip for that, then the daypass prints out of the slot. Then on your next few buses, you swipe, rather than dip, but you can dip if you want to.

Of course, i dunno if this is fact, but that's what I've seen on similar fareboxes in other systems. I hate the fact that the swiping point is on the other side of the box. But, it's the most popular new farebox out there today, so I guess it works...

The new DART boxes seem to be compatible with touchless smart card technology.

More likely with the day pass you can swipe it along the card swiper as well as inserting in the slot where the card comes out. Rabbit Transits are like that. And most likely Baltimore MTAs are the same.
