DART’s Driver Cell Phone Usage Notice – We know that many riders have expressed concern over the years about our drivers using cell phones while driving. So you are aware, all DART drivers have been told that it has come to our (management’s) attention that operators and maintenance personnel are using cellular phones (with/without headsets) for personal, non-emergency calls while operating a DART Bus. As you know, operating a DART Bus takes the full attention and concentration of the operator. This practice not only jeopardizes our passengers’ safety, but also the safety of our operators’ and IS PROHIBITED.

The latest DART email notice includes how DART management has been receiving complaints about drivers talking on cell phones without a headset while driving. So that means. Hopefully this issue is going to drop severely. I dont know how often this happens but when I rode 105 the first Saturday of 2008 the driver was listening to music through headphones. Which is illegal to do when driving any vehicle. So basically DARTs operators and maintenance are prohibited from using cell phones while operating the buses. But many of them do not obey that rule. Some accept that its prohibited and some do not care that its prohibited and do it anyway.

I have been receiving emails from DART whenever DART does updates after I once contacted them back in 2007. Since then whenever DART emails an update I receive the update through my email. Since my email address is in their news release list. And that was one paragraph shown on the latest email sent. Any time you email DART with a question or comment your email address is automatically saved into their system so news letters do go out to you. This paragraph I saw was not shown on their website but it was emailed to anyone whos email address was automatically programmed into their address book.

DART isnt the only TA who has problems with operators talking on cell phones. Baltimore MTA has the same issue. Rabbit Transit and Harrisburg I only saw it once and that was it. And the rest of the TAs I rode. I did not see a single driver talk on a cell phone while driving. I did see a WMATA Metro bus driver talk on a cell phone but he did it during his layover. MTA Maryland as well as DART First State Ive seen them talk on cell phones while operating the bus. I dont know how DARTs Kent/Sussex County drivers obey that rule but New Castle County Ive seen them talk on cell phones almost every time Ive visited that area.

Heres the notice that included driver cell phone use. It is dangerous to talk on a cell phone while driving. It distracts the driver causing them to make driving mishaps.
