There's also one more thing in the future too. Don't forget about the ALP-45DP that will be arriving in 2012 or so. It will be a great advantage for this line including using both diesel power in ACL line while using electric power (with the pantograph) in Northeast Corridor.
The ALP45DP will be used predominately on direct Bay Head-NYC on the North Jersey Coast, direct High Bridge/Raritan EXP to NYC on the Raritan Valley and most MidTOWN Direct service, notably Hackettstown to NYC via Montclair State University/Summit. The only lines that isn't expected to see the 'DP's are the Atlantic City, Northeast Corridor, Pascack Valley, Main-Bergen, and the Southern Tier (Port Jervis).
Let's hope that NJ Transit would send some PL42AC down to ACL line when some of the lines in Raritan and Midtown Direct would receive those ALP-45DP allowing them to begin replacing all of GP40 locomotive which has been running for more than 40 years by then.
NJTR need the PL42's for straight diesels with the Multilevels. They can handle 6-7 of those bastards where any GP40 or F40 would struggle. Besides short of rehabbing more AMTRAK P40DC's (and they have alot) expect to see those MK beasts on south jersey for some time.

Ok for now, we'll continue seeing the P40 and GP40-2B locomotives on the ACL line now, but in the future about few years from now, the GP40 will almost 50 years old and I'm betting that someday NJ Transit will get either more new Diesel (Diesel only locomotive) or Dual Power (Electric and Diesel) to replace those GP40. I wonder when they'll replace the last of those locomotive built in the 60's and early 70's.
