This morning during rush hour around 7:30-8:00 i was on my route 34 and in the tunnel and as of recent i;ve been coming from Center City during the PM rush hour....and i've started to noticed something. The CBTC seems to be able to be working properly and seems to be able to function and i notice no "Stop AN Go" , or any "SPEED RESTRICTIONS" ....my trolley this morning was gunning some good speed thru the tunnel this morning, i was suprised.

Anyone notice a diffrence ?

I noticed on a trolley I recently rode, that horrible speedometer (with that tiny floating indicator that would move back and forth to allowed speeds) was replaced with a twin LED readout.

The top row had red numbers and labeled "Permitted Speed"
The bottom row had green numbers and labeled "Actual Speed"

*scratches head* or did I get that reversed? LOL

They are replacing the computers in the LRVs and that's supposed to fix the problems they've been having.

9048 is the car with the prototype speedometer & i've only driven it once I don't like it at all. Such a shame as when I 1st went to rail, this was my favorite car for a long time, but she seems to have an attitude & has lost a step!

Hmm! I wonder if this will spread throughout all of the cars.

Has the Maximum Allowable Speed in the tunnel actually dropped since the CBTC went in? How fast were trolleys going beforehand?

The MAS has always been 40, but CBTC also adds in braking and acceleration curves that a operator has to watch out for (the penalty application recovery is brutally slow on them) so that begins to drop your average speed. The maxi maximum allowable following distance is significantly greater, which means that you're not tailing your leader closely enough to tell how dirty his back window is, and again CBTC forces you down to a prescribed speed relative to distance (at least its a rolling block instead of fixed ones), again dropping your speed. Carlos can explain more.

Max speed in the hole is actually 35mph, but if I get a permitted speed of 42 why not take it! Prior to CBTC being implemented full time the trolleys would govern out at about 44-45mph, but on nite-liners we would hit 55-57mph under the river. Those were the days!!!! Man I miss them dearly.

I remember just flying through the tunnel on PCC's, especially under the river. Back when the K-cars were having that wheel issue and PCC's substituted on Route 10 for a few months in the late 1980's, I swear the operators were flooring it under the river for old times' sake. The sounds were awesome!

That would sound cool. Having the ops gunning their All Electrics (or Air/Electrics back then) would be a blast for them. Too bad I was born in '87 , when both the PCCs and the k-cars were in TOTAL force.
