If you want to get late train out of Center City, you will be subject to some of the train station doors being closed. My friends had to walk all the way around to 11th St.?

Also you will subject to a lot of passed out people sleeping on the waiting benches , so that's a bummer!

Anybody know why this is done and exactly which doors are closed?

You mean both sets at 11th and Filbert? Those - along with the entrance under Reading Terminal and 10-Filbert - aren't supposed to be closed until 01.30 because of those last trains. Add in the fact that the two outside entrances are also the ADA requireds, means that someone screwed up royally.

The only entrance that IS supposed to be closed is the three connecting the Gallery to the station, including the connecting hallway to 11th Street MFSE; that closes with the Mall and reopens at 05.30 for the commuters.

Suburban Station remains open as far as I know. I am not sure when the doors/gates close.

Philadelphia Police are good about locking up at 01.30, although they regularly miss the entrance on 15th right by the Municipal Services Building (NE corner of 15th and JFK). All doors are open by 04.00 by the cleaners for that 04.16 Trenton Train (7701). Weekends and after 9PM, Philadelphia Police patrol the station and kick out the homeless.

Market East is confusing for those who don't know it and probably went out through the Gallery when they arrived, only to find this entrance closed and locked (and no signs directing them to the very-much less obvious entrances on Filbert). I have come across flustered people trying to get a train in my few instances of using ME after the Gallery closes and have always wondered why signage isn't placed to help them. It also isn't very obvious that the Gallery doors are locked, etc until one tries them.

A solution I suggested previously was that the entrance next to K-Mart at the NE corner of 10th & Market, which leads to an escalator and stairway, be kept open and signed after hours. This leads to the 'concourse' level of the Gallery and the 'hallway' entrance to ME, which could be left open while the larger entrance to the west can be closed. I was told this is not preferred by security and the concourse-level shops. Strangely enough, this situation exists every morning and the concourse-level shops that sell coffee, etc are very happy, I'm sure.
