I thought they were to be built in Philadelphia in the naval yard section of Philadelphia. I remember reading somewhere that the bodies were being devoloped in Korea, but the remaining work will be done right here in Philadelphia. This could explain the lite trackage in South Philadelphia.

Back in the 1960s, Budd near Trevose PA used the Reading West Trenton Branch known today at West Trenton (R7) to run the metroliners under catenary to test these units for the PRR. They also done the same for the Prioneer's and the Silverliner II cars as well.

Trevose?? What are you smoking? The ex-Budd Yard is just north of Philmont Station. A good 10 minutes before Trevose. The site is seeing lots of activity as of recent, with the track improvements being done on the WT branch.

I said near trevose pal! Not in Trevose, PA. How many people actually know where Philmont is at? I'm not a native up there and live in West Philadelphia, so I referred the area as near Trevose.

It's still not near Trevose. That's like saying it's near Neshaminy or Near Elkins Park. It's just outside the city limits in the Far Northeast.

Location: East Oregon Ave. (RR) RailRoad Crossing
Where you cross the tracks near the UPS warehouse.
Where Rt. G runs to Columbus Commons, Rt.7 to Columbus Blvd & Pier 70, and Rt. 57 which runs to Packer Marine Terminal. All these Routes run East on Oregon Ave.

I was a whole mile away on Snyder. I was on Oregon and front st. but oh well.

rode past the rotem plant on saturday night when i was driving the 7 bus and at the railroad crossing at oregon ave they put up a new gate that blocks the rail line i notice alot of the freight trains has been running back down columbus since csx rebuilt the track under the walt whitman bridge so now i havent seen trains taking the branch that runs past the rotem plant and with the line gated off at oregon ave i dont think trains will be using that side except the test trains that will come out the factory soon.

The line you noted (in the bed of Vandalia St) has been inactive for quite a while. The only 'customer' on it for a number of years was the CSX intermodal yard which became Columbus Crossing. CSX, CP, etc use the Delaware Ave track.

Whether the Vandalia St track will be used to move the cars from the plant out for delivery, etc remains to be seen.

actulally that track has seen lots of action lately mainly late at night or early in the morning because when i had the 79 in the morning hours in the summer every friday i see the train drop off box cars to the warehouse across from famous daves bbq and on the track next to that warehouse plus CXS fixed the track just off snyder crossing when the train a derailed 2months ago but like i said earlier since they repaired the track under the walt whitman bridge the train has not been using that branch and they put a gate up so u cant acess the line from oregon but u can get to it at the wolf st crossing ride by and investigate and it will all make sense. The train that i see always have 2 engines on each end of the consist so the engines dont have to suffel around alot to push and pull box cars off the sidings.

Septafan, maybe you can check this out the next time you're near the ROTEM facility. According to several reports, S-III 237 was towed by a CSX local job early last week to the plant for lift and crane testing. The 237 was at Wayne Electric for a transformer replacement and will be down there for about two-three weeks. With the S-V prototypes due in port later this month, that building SHOULD be buzzing with activity.
