Is there any word on whether or not SEPTA is still getting the Silverliner Vs? If so when are they scheduled to arrive?

Well despite the fact that this board is suppose to cover all modes of transit most members tend to ignore rail! Well while everyone was obsessing over the hybrids a Silverliner V left South Korea bound for Philly!

Hyundai Rotem Ships its first EMU railcars to US

- To export 120 Electrics Multiple Units by 2010
- Railcars to be finished in Hyundai Rotem's production plant in US
- Total 326 units, 1 trillion won (KRW) exported to US in the past 3 years
- Powering up to export high speed trains to the US market

Hyundai Rotem, an affiliate company of the Hyundai Motor Group, seeking to agressively tap the US market.

Hyundai Rotem has announced that it has shipped over the first railcar to the US for SEPTA( the Southeastern Philadelphia Transportation Authority) on 1, Sept. at the Masan Port.

The cars, that were shipped to Philadelphia, are SKD(Semi Knock Down) products that will be finished at Hyundai Rotem's production plant.

In May 2006, Hyundai Rotem won the contract for 120 units $270 million dollars (USD)from SEPTA, setting aside competitors from Japan and Canada. After two years of designing and engineering, the first car was finally shipped for completion. Hyundai Rotem also held a mock-up assessment session in Philadelphia, where the car was highly acknowledged for its quality. Hyundai Rotem will finish producing the SEPTA EMU's, total 120 units, by 2010.

Hyundai Rotem's plant in Philadelphia will start its operation in Nov, 2009. Once the production stars, it is expected to create 350 jobs for the local people and contribute to the community.

Prior to this project most of the railcars in the states were provided by Alstom and Bombardier, due to the strict durability and safety standards. In 2006, Hyundai Rotem has succeeded in breaking into the US market by achieving RAMS(Reliability Availability Maintainability and Safety) which ensures the quality and reliability of the railcars, for the Hong Kong EMU project and aggressively appealing its improved quality to the US market.

An official of Hyundai Rotem said, "The US railway market size is about 2 billion dollars and investments for railway infrastructure such as high speed trains and subway for
metropolitan cities is expected to increase." He added, "Through the success of this project Hyundai Rotem is seeking to win the high speed train contract."

In the past 3 years Hyundai Rotem has won the contract for the SEPTA(South East Philadelphia Train Authorities) EMU p, Bi-level coaches for Los Angeles and bi-level commuter coaches for Boston, a total of 326units amounting to 1 trillion won

Thanks, Victory5905, for the info. From what I am sure, they look more like subway cars than like the older Silverliners. I hope they are quiet.

I'll see if they survive the trip first.

*My Estimates*
Korea to Panama = 7500 Miles
Panama Canal Transit = 250 Miles
Panama to Philadelphia via the Florida Keys = 4000 Miles
Total Trip = 11750 Miles
11750/15 MPH (12 knots) = 783 hours = 33 days.

Assuming it left two days later than the picture (Sept. 3rd) it still wouldn't be calling Philadelphia until the second week in October, give or take a few days because of hurricane season (why take the risk).

I'd say start looking at the big active Delaware River docks mid October for that ship.

Can't wait to ride them soon. I wonder I how they perform especially on the R5 Thorndale Line (That's where I frequently ride it).

Dude you seriously have too much time on your hands. You forgot to factor in the 15-20% waiting time.

Dude, you're right!! If you haven't noticed, those numbers are not accurate because you still have to get past Hawaii and its not taking into account extra stops which can add weeks onto delivery. I'm REALLY going to be pressing for checking for salt water contamination in the car systems and frame.

The Silverliner IV will remain in service for couple more years before it will be replaced by add on Silverliner V or the proposed new Silverlienr VI rail car.
