Hey, I'm here in Pittsburgh now! This will be my transit blog, I will post sightings, recordings, and news here from the Pittsburgh area. For 2 days I had no internet, but now I am connected. So far I have seen the Neoplans, Gilligs, Nova's, and love it all! So far my Pitt experience has been great, look forward to more info soon. ;)

Today I rode an ISM powered Gillig Advantage and a 3100 DD Series 60 powered Neoplan AN460 (confused me, sounded like ISM inside). I have audio from the Neo, will upload it later after I re-listen to it.

Pretty soon, Pittsburgh is going to be as boring with it's "all Gillig all the time" as Philly is starting to become with its "all New Flyer all the time" rut.

At least we still have NYC and the DC-area (WMATA, RideOn, Fairfax Connector) for true bus diversity.

So today I rode ISM powered 5618 (Gillig Advantage), along with a DD50 powered Advantage on the 59U. All the DD50 powered buses out her smoke a lot. Also recorded some DD50/DD60/Cummins Neoplan An460's on the East Busway, video coming soon.

Also, those DD60 Neo's are BEASTS! They are loud and powerful, they sound like they have much more power than DD50 Neo's.

Nice pics. Where are those RTSs parked? I'm glad they still have them - I saw a photograph of one of their new Gillig Low Floors.

You didn't ride one of the 3000 series Neoplans? You'll DEFINITELY notice the difference in power. They sound great for Neos with DD60s - better than Bee-Line's in NY and WMATA's in DC.

I did ride one yesterday from downtown to Oakland, it was a great ride and the engine sounded like a Cummins to me. The DD60 is a great engine, wish some Septa Neoplans had it.

Its actually the 3100 series Neoplan AN460s that have Detroit Diesel Series 60. To me a Series 60 makes a better Neoplan An460 engine then the Series 50. If SEPTA waited until 2002 to purchase the Neoplan AN460s they would have Series 60 instead of 50. Since after 2000 the Series 50 was no longer an option for the An460. It was either ISM or Series 60.

off topic warning:

I actually wanted SEPTA to overhaul em and give them a Cummins ISM after i heard how the ISL sounded in the 8000 series.... the only problem is that... what if somehow... the ISM ended up sounding like the "ISL" in the 5600 series :(

i gots to stop going off topic :$

BTW that was a nice RTS Pic jayayess1190 ;)

Today I rode the lightrail, a Nova Classic, and a ISM Gillig again. Have video and photos. The lightrail runs really infrequently today. Downtown Pittsburgh was not busy at all today.

Downtown Pittsburgh is the Pitts transit-wise on weekends. I think they are working on upgrading the system...of course, with funding up in the air...

So far the lightrail is getting extended to the North Shore via a tunnel, making it easier for people to go to sports games. Also, Pat is thinking of doing a major overhaul of their routes. Many will be renamed, some eliminated. I hope it happens, because the routes out here are a little confusing with all the letters. See http://tdp.portauthority.org/paac/ for details.

The letters are certainly confusing. Unlike some other cities, the numbers don't appear to be "Base routes" while the letters reflect branches.

Sometimes engines can sound different on different bus models. The Cummins ISL on a New Flyer D40LF sounds like a quieter late 90s M11. And the ISL on Gillig Advantages sound somewhat like the ISC somewhat like a late 90s M11. So the ISM possibly sounds different on Gilligs then on New Flyers.
