The other day, I saw a yellow "Exact Change" sticker on the outside of a Washington Twp NABI (5330) bus similar to what appears (or used to appear) on a lot of the buses up north. This surprised me because, at present, none of the routes out of Washington Twp garage are exact change. Now that the 403 was cut back to Camden instead of crossing the bridge, does this mean that we will start to see the end of "full service" fare collection on most of the Washington Twp routes (ie. 400, 403, 406, the Woodbury routes, etc)? |

I won't be surprised if it is going to happen. The cutbacks to the 403/413/419 lines removed one zone from these routes and in general NJT practice, routes with more than 5 zones are "Full Service" routes using MCI cruisers while routes with 5 zones or less are "Exact Fare" lines using Transits or Suburbans. [There are some exceptions in N.Jersey. the Fort Lee lines and the 190 Paterson route are 5 zones or less and they are "Full Service Lines". Probably because of all of those "Pirate Buses" that ply those lines.] If "Exact Fare" routes come to the Broadway/Woodbury/Glassboro routes, then NJT will need a lot more than 42 NABIs at Wash. Twp since those lines uses MCIs 90% of the time, plus they would have to reroute the 401/402/410 lines off Broadway in Camden. If "Exact Fare" is coming, then expect it to happen within 6 months to a year. I hear that NJT is getting new Fareboxes and registers within the time period and that would be an optimum time to make a fare policy changeover. |

I could see the 400, 403 and 406 (along with the 459 and 463) becoming exact fare lines, but the other lines out of Washington Twp ... not so much. Unless these new fareboxes are capable of issuing "credit" for overpayment of fares, I don't see how that's going to happen. |
