I would be interested to learn whether and how your local system numbers it's vehicles and whether there is any discernible pattern to it. Below are a few articles about vehicle numbering, I would venture a guess that the predominant theme would be basing it on year purchased or order if there are frequently many in the same year, perhaps vehicle type and then of course a final number to differentiate from each other. Are there any other methods?

Baltimore MTA. The first 2 digits of the number indicate the year the coach was built. It was 4 digit numbers from 02 and older and 5 digit numbers from 04 and newer. But they only refer the last 4 digits when saying the number.

Ride On of Montgomery County, MD, has an interesting method of numbering their buses. First, since they are numbered with other county vehicles, the first number, which is a 5, is reserved for Ride On buses.

The numbering sequences has evolved over time, with some buses (the 35 foot CNG Orion Vs, the Gillig Low Floor Hybrids, and the Orion VI CNGs) being renumbered. Here goes as I can remember it:

5000s: 30 foot buses (Gillig Low Floors)
5100s: diesel cutaways
5200s: gasoline cutaways
5300s: now becoming the series for hybrids - also contains 35 foot diesel Gillig Phantoms
5400s: undefined - right now contains 35 foot Gillig Phantoms
5500s: undefined - right now contains 30 foot Orion Is on the lower end, then 35 foot 1996 Orion Vs, then 2001 Orion Vs
5600s: undefined, but likly continues with the 35 foot Orion Vs
5700s: diesel 40 foot buses
5800s: CNG 40 foot buses
5900s: CNG 35 foot buses
