As described from here by Van2006ko: http://philadelphiatransitforums.cjb.net/topic/7148244/3/

I spotted a cummins powered NABI seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvhxiOrJ2dA

The engine sounded different as well as different ZF transmission. Back in the days before the arrival with the NABIs, I use to hear the 6H-592 on the 2004 and 2005 New Flyers

From the BusChat forums, the engine switch took place starting with 5350 as opposed to 5346. The transmission is the same ZF EcoMat as opposed to the ZF EcoLite.

The NABIs with Cummins ISL are somewhat faster than the ones with the CAT 13, even though most would expect the reverse

The Cummins ISL somewhat sounds more powerful then the ISM. And from what I hear is more EPA friendly then the ISM. I did hear the Series 50 gets hot after a while. The ISM does the same thing. Sometimes I wish Bmore MTA got ISL instead of ISM on the D40LFs.

Because it is a 280HP and is 9.3 litter engine. If you see cummins power engines on SEPTA 2003 New Flyer D40LFs, they prove it that the engine is powerful

So basically, Ctrabs74 and I both got the video of the first Cummins power NABIs in service since these buses are the first running at South Jersey as they continue to take delivery of these buses.

The ISL to my knowledge is 8.9 liters. Unless the size changed recently. The ISM is 10.8 liters. Both have 280HP. Plus the ISM has been around since 1994. The sound changed sometime in the 2000s. So that can explain why Baltimores NABIs sound different then the New Flyers even though both have ISM.

NABIs sound different from flyers period. The SEPTA 1997 NABIs and the 2001 New Flyers have similar motors and transmissions, but the New Flyers sound more powerful (sorta doubtful of that since the flyers give off too much heat at times

Also, those newer cummins isl engines built after late 2007 tends to sound much more quieter, not the usual loud engine (minus the radiator engine that sometimes runs along with the engine, leaving only the engine itself) thats used on SEPTA 2003 New Flyers.

SEPTAs 03 New Flyers originally had Detroit Diesel Series 50. I dont know what year the ISL was retrofitted onto the 03 Flyers. But I do notice DARTs 08 Gilligs ISLs are quieter then CATs 07 ISLs. The ISL hybrid sounds different then the ISL diesel as well. And the ISL does sound different on the New Flyer D40LF then the Gillig Advantage. The Series 50. It had some changes with the specs over the years so newer Series 50s are quieter then older Series 50s. And the inside sound. It can be different on different models.

As for Baltimores NABIs and New Flyers. The ISM sounds more powerful on the Flyers then on the NABIs as well. And the Series 50 on the Neos. Doesnt even sound like a typical Series 50.

They were overhauled starting I think roughly the mid/end of 2007 to about 2008ish.

5617 and 5640 were the trial retrofits. This was in 2006. The 5600 group from Southern was moved to Midvale earlier that year. 5684 was one of the last 5600s at Midvale to receive a retrofit.
