Time is almost here and the deadline is 12 in the midnight. That means as of 5:57 P.M, there's only about 6 hours left before the workers go on strikes since there's no sign of contract agreement with the unions. Looks like they're ready to on strike likely with the result that it could affect passengers that take the transit to the city not only that, how are passengers are going to find their alternative transportation to Citizen Bank Park to see tomorrow's world series game.

We heard they changed all the locks on the depots(districts) to keep the drivers out if they go onstrike.

I heard that Bob Brady has been brought in to put a stop to this and that's not right to change the locks in the depots and I mean one of these days not only the public will turn against SEPTA and the Union but also the workers will as well because I think those who do not want to strike should turn against the Union that is the only way the public will win. I heard the union is hoping to use the world series as a bargaining chip in a attempt to gain national attention during games 3-5 and as Bob Brady said that will just backfire and well Willie Brown is out of his mind. I mean I will not just sit here and become a hostage for the union nope I will fight back by showing my support for the workers and show him that you, TWU Local 234 and SEPTA aren't going to take hostages mainly the public and the workers.

With strike looming, union delays SEPTA talks

By Paul Nussbaum

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

With the clock ticking toward a midnight strike deadline, talks between SEPTA and its largest union have been postponed.

Negotiators for Transport Workers Union Local 234 will resume talks with SEPTA negotiators at 5:30 p.m. today, union spokesman Robert Wolper said. He gave no reason for the delay.

The union, which represents SEPTA bus drivers, trolley and subway operators and mechanics, says it will walk out at midnight tonight, if an agreement is not reached by then.

SEPTA spokesman Richard Maloney called the delay "unconscionable," and said "it is a thumb in the eye of a million members of the riding public who want to see a settlement."

"We're ready to talk. We're ready to go," Maloney said.

The two sides met last night until about 10 p.m. and exchanged proposals regarding wages, benefits and pensions.

A strike would shut down bus, subway and trolley service in Philadelphia, just as the World Series shifts here from New York for three games.

Regional Rail service would not be interrupted.

According to TWU officials, SEPTA management has proposed no wage increase for the first two years of a four-year contract and a 2 percent increase in each of the final two years. It also wants to increase worker contributions to health coverage from 1 percent to 4 percent and freeze the level of pension benefits.

The union wants a 4 percent raise each year and health contributions to remain 1 percent. It is also seeking an increase in pension contributions from $75 to $100 for every year of service.

The TWU also is seeking changes in subcontracting and training provisions to allow members to do maintenance and repair work on buses and trolleys now done by outside contractors.

SEPTA bus, subway, and trolley operators earn from $14.54 to $24.24 an hour, reaching the top rate after four years. Mechanics earn $14.40 to $27.59 an hour.

Just imagine being on the bus, train, or trolley and getting kicked off soon as the clock strikes midnight.

I am guessing the operators finish thier last run closest to midnight then head back to the yards?

I last learned that both sides are still talking no hints of a agreement or a strike at the moment.

Fern Rock yards is a ghost town now. The normal traffic I would hear on olney Ave. from my window is gone.

That's because I heard that both sides are still talking and Brown had said it was going to be a long or short strike and mentioned that to tell SEPTA to have the buses back in their depots around 10:30 but that didn't happen which means I have a feeling that they will be talking way into the morning and possibility into the weekend. But for now so far so good which is good that the walkout hasn't happened yet. Plus Bob Brady is still there too which means he is still involved. Update the Mayor and Governor are now finally involved and the strike deadline has been extended to 6PM tonight before the World Series. So far so good the tide is turning in the favor of the riding public with Rendell and Nutter involved at the monent.

Septafan has told me that control told him to go as far as Broad & Erie last night on his last trip and charter back in to Southern. Sure enough he said the gates on 20th where buses usually pull out are now shut. Also all the bay's garage door is shut Johnston St.
