While the Phillies were able to hit home runs and not strike out (not too much, atleast..), the Transit Workers Union 234 has decided to strike after negotiations ended earlier tonight. Good luck to those who need SEPTA tomorrow. I'll still be visiting a friend in Villanova via the R5. Hopefully it won't be too crowded!

Yes I'm aware of this since septafan also told me via text messaging and even though someone I spoke to from Allegheny she told me that they didn't get the word yet but the other news websites and philly dotcom confirmed this too. Other wise lets hang in there until the sides talk again and this is stopped they said the wages are what lead to this walkout. septafan also mentioned to me that the talks will resume at 10am and all I have to say is to SEPTA knock it and give your workers their contract.

They should just pulled the state funding from them. I'm beyond pissed, yet I was expecting this!

Kyle I agree with you in a way and I thought Septa said they won't strike even though contract talks continued, also Septa probably just extended this deadline most likely for the Philles, Flyers, Eagles, and 76ers revenue this past weekend

The Union said they will not strike over the weekend... but they never said that the strike threat was completely adverted. As nearly 25 year citizen of Philadelphia, I was expecting this!!

SEPTA-management has nothing to do with deadlines. The union is the one who made the deadlines. I really wished they would have strike on Friday-Saturday and kept their original deadline. Instead of striking with only 2-3 hours noticed, that just shows what kind of union we have in the city.

I used to think that way as well before pursuing the accounting professional. The truth is, we are in a recession, there is no money around. If the Union want their wages then SEPTA would have to find money for that. The TA already has a 5 Million deficit so their books are already in a net loss. In order to meet with the union's demands, they will have to raise fares to $2.50 or $3.00 in order to meet with their demands. You'd also have to think that in 2010, the Act44 funding may not be there to provide additional funding for SEPTA.

At the end, the citizens are the real victims in this!!

From a reliable source. The strike is not over economic issues, they were going to give them 11-1/2% over 5 years,0, 2 1/2, 3 ,3 & 3 and a $1250.00 signing bonus. The pension was raised a meager amount, but acceptable.

The main issue was that seniority and picking rights of the maintenance employees could not be guaranteed, so an employee would have to work anywhere. SEPTA kept saying "We will be fair with this and do the right thing". This language is not binding and vague for the workers so they went on strike.

All Victory buses were running this morning with no delays that I noticed. Lots of pissed people at 69th St.

According a 110 driver the UTU does not want to strike during these economic times. They might be the sensilble ones.

You see this is why I NEVER get my hopes up if I hear a strike is adverted yet there is no agreement. It automatically means there will be an inevitable strike. I took the R7 (an SRO train). And Midvale's garage is packed with buses parked any ol' where. Ahhh...a crowded S-IV!!
I don't know how long this famine will last but I just can't see a city bigger than Washington DC running without transit!!

Victory division(Red arrow), is still working and collecting paychecks. That union always reaps the benefits of a city contract and does nothing to help the cause of their city brothers.
UTU 1594 should go out on strike to show solidarity.Pickets lines are forming at major SEPTA city terminals.

If the UTU gonna walk out, it may mess up the Suburban riders, as well as the city riders.
THANK GOD FOR THE REGIONAL RAIL LINES
