I hope SEPTA can do what they can to avoid these fires from happening again. Its worse to have a Regional Rail or Subway fire then it is to have a bus fire. Since a bus fire. Everyone can escape as soon as the bus stops on the side of the road and does not effect service. Plus a bus is cheaper to replace then a Regional Rail car. Some TAs add onto the next order to replace buses lost due to damage. Others retire fewer buses to replace those lost due to damage.

well at least it was a surface car and not a 3rd rail type of train so i dont have to scream "i hate subways" like i have been when i hear of other heavy rail accidents

You would scream "I hate subways" if an N5 explodes underneath you?

Why do you hate subways, they help move millions of people around quickly and efficiently the world everyday.

Im sure there have been subway fires in the past. If a subway catches fire inside the tunnel then you can still escape the train. And walk through the tunnel until you can get to a near by exit. Thats mainly why all of SEPTAs subway stations have fire alarm systems. And the same with PATCO. So incase a fire occurs either from something in the station construction or if a train catches fire. The DC and Baltimore Metros do not have fire alarm systems in the stations.

Yes, Brandon, if I lived to say it, I would. Or I may paraphrase it to the type of rail that is relevant, since the NHSL is not a "subway". But the NHSL is actually my favorite 3rd rail route in SEPTA's system.
I remember the days when I was fascinated by my first subway ride(s), but now after riding the BSL hundreds upon hundreds of times in the past 7 years, my subway enjoyment has dried up. And if I (asperger's) witness any incident that is graphic, I may lose my sanity for MONTHS!!!!!
And you don't want that now do you???
And to rub it in my face, the BSL got a new ANNOYING GPS system announcer that I will gladly sacrifice for a ride on route C or the RR.

(wow, venting is kinda fun!)

Heres another article about the Regional Rail fire. Im glad SEPTA rented school buses to help out. It beats leaving runs missing to have shuttle buses for the R5.

Um, SEPTA's on strike. There ARE no shuttle buses! That's why they had to ask the Philadelphia School District to provide the buses and drivers.

I'm glad they were able to do that.

If Baltimore MTA ran into a similar issue with any of its rail lines causing service to be shut down without enough buses for both local runs and rail shuttles. Local runs would be missing during the shutdown. Like the time a wheel cracked on a Light Rail car last November causing a service disruption from North Ave to Hunt Valley. They had to leave many local runs missing during that week as they dont have enough buses to their fleet to accomodate both a Light Rail shuttle for half the line. And all local runs. They nearly had to get used buses from either WMATA or Charlotte SCs transit system.

So does Philadelphias school district own the entire school bus fleet? Over in York where I currently reside the entire county just about has contracts with companies to provide school bus transportation. I think each school district works with different companies. Like the Red Lion district works with Red Lion Motorcoach for school bus transportation. And closer to York Ive seen companies such as Reliance Motorcoach. And maybe some others.

You are so correct....

SEPTA had not one, but TWO fires aboard Broad Street Subway cars back in the darkest down days of the line in 1979 and 1980. I believe both fires were at Erie station, one NB, and one SB.

Of course this predates the current fleet by a few years. Only local and Ridge service was operating, and at one point in 1979-1980, there were so many cars out of service with mechanical problems that only 26 cars were available to handle the entire line. Six 4-car sets of trains, and two spares....

It was a mess. The Kawasaki B-IV's couldn't come fast enough....

With NYCs Subway being the biggest Im sure they have had subway fires in the past as well. Same maybe even with Washington DCs Metro. And Im sure even Amtrak has had train fires in the past. And almost every major TA has had buses catch fire as well.

That's one of the reasons as to why I ride the C from end to end.

Hey, I used to do it from time to time when I was still at UPS. And what was worse was when I was doing Fridays (the normal UPSer work Monday-Thursday and Saturday) the stragglers who caught 7215 Block (Septafan might know it as the 3.51 through trip), I used to get off at Pattison Avenue and wait the 5 minutes for Saturday 3554 block to pull up, which was almost always a 'vale snake.

Good Times......
